Learn how to help others who are helping you network

An objective you should have while networking should be to gain an understanding of other people’s needs and concerns. This way you can make an assessment as to whether they would have any interest in the resources you provide. Networking is not always about enhancing yourself. Too often people focus on themselves instead of reaching out to others as well. Helping your contacts sets you apart from most individuals who are often only seeking the benefits for themselves. Think of the old saying “You scratch my back, I’ll scratch yours.” It is beneficial to ask questions and collect as much information as possible. In doing this you can easier identify the types of people you want to make contact with. Having a quick description prepared of your profession and what you can provide can be essential in networking.
